Edgebrook’s History
Few Edgebrook members remember how the club was started, or more importantly, realize the courage and vision of its founding members. Construction on the pool started in late 1959, but for more than a year before that, Board members met almost nightly, month after month after month, in an attempt to recruit enough neighbors to get the club off the ground. During the early years, the club managed and maintained the School District’s outdoor tennis courts that adjoin our property. In those early years, Edgebrook had a champion swim team. Many of their swim records still stand to this day. Edgebrook remains a member owned facility to this day. Pride in ownership! |
In 1977, the three indoor tennis courts were built. The pool bleachers were created as a retaining wall for the tennis building. This was our tennis facility until December of 1996 when a snow/ice storm collapsed the roof and destroyed the building. The tennis courts were rebuilt in 1997 using a new metal building. The problem was that we had to rebuild on the original foot print. The City would not let us add a viewing area or another court at that time since they gave us a “disaster building permit” to expedite the process.
In 1999 Brad Hixenbaugh became the manager of the Club. He and the Club Board investigated several options to remodel the facility. We definitely needed a viewing area and the members wanted another court. We also needed new office space since we were operating out of the Aquatic’s building that was never designed for year round operation.
Finally in 2004 the economics made it possible to proceed with the project. We worked with a builder, Sunset Pacific Contractors from Tacoma and designed a facility that would meet our needs. We designed the building to add a 1000 sq ft viewing area, another tennis court, and a 2000 sq ft office building. We also upgraded the lighting in our current tennis building at that time.
We began construction in April 2005 and had our Grand Opening on April 23, 2006. It turned out to be a solid one year project, but it was well worth it. The members and staff are overjoyed with our new facility and the best part was we were able to do it without increasing the Club dues! By refinancing our old mortgage and projecting 40 additional members we were able to maintain our cost within the projected budget.
If you live in Seattle's Eastside area and are looking for a place to play tennis, drop in and give us a try. I’m sure you enjoy our new facility. We do!
